So is the legacy lounge really worth the extra money? Do they take you to your train from this lounge? Any body know what time they call for sleeper passengers for the California zephyr.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

I prefer it to the Metropolitan Lounge, but I wouldn't pay to use it if I had access to the Metropolitan Lounge. For me, the $20 is worth it to stay out of the coach waiting room and beat the rush to the 6:00 Wolverine. When I have a business class ticket, though, I can board from the Metropolitan Lounge, so using the Legacy Lounge is sort of pointless.

That said, the lounge is incredible. It has tons of natural light and high ceilings, there is plenty of seating available, it's quiet, the beverage and snack areas feel more like a high class hotel than a McDonald's, and the bathrooms (well, the ladies' room anyway) have these nice baskets with mouthwash, band-aids, lotion, and other things you might want during a layover. They really put a lot of thought and work into the lounge. Plus, if you're into history and architecture, it's worth a gander.

They will pre-board you from the Legacy Lounge. They use a PA, just like the Metropolitan Lounge, and they walk you all the way from the Great Hall to the concourse.

The California Zephyr leaves at 2:00, so I believe they'll call for sleeper passengers at 1:15. When you check into the lounge (either lounge), they'll give you a pass with your "time to be back" written on it. That way, you can feel free to explore the city a bit. Both lounges have a baggage hold area.

I think the real question is do they escort coach passengers, and in such a way that they beat the everyone else to the train.

My question was really is it better than the metro lounge. I am traveling in a sleeper but see its more for coach passengers. Nothing "historical" . I needed the boarding time so I know how much time I have to explore the city.

Yes, as Sarah noted, the time they will write on your Lounge pass is 1:15, though in my experience, they often start boarding a little later. If a few extra minutes is important, you can arrive safely around 1:30 PM. Note that if you arrive past the escort time, you may get The Lecture from the lounge attendant/s, but of course they will see to it that you get on the train.

Occasionally there are delays even with originating trains. Last summer, I took a shuttle from O'Hare to Union Station to catch the CZ. For whatever reason, the shuttle driver assumed that Union Station was like another hotel or something (where the other passengers were going) and so was dropping the other passengers off at this hotel and that hotel and finally the last stop was Union Station, putting my arrival there around 1:50-2:00. I kept checking the train status on the app and noticed there was a delay, so felt safe in not rebooking. Come to find out, they were waiting on a tour group which had not arrived at the station and thus held the train for their arrival.

The CZ didn't depart that day until 2:20 PM.

(Though I'm sure some of the crew later wished that they hadn't waited for this group, as many of the members hadn't been on a train before and were put out that they couldn't have a seat to themselves or their party in the Dining Car and other such petty things.)
