If I recieve word on anything regarding NOL crewmembers, providing the material is permissible to post here I will let y'all know of anything important. At the worse case scenario regarding their jobs, they can utilize their nationwide rights into the other crewbases if it comes down to that. We all should keep them in our thoughts and prayers, however. OBS...

Gotta love insurance money and a brand new truck.
Yeah bat, you make a good point there in one respect, but when it is all said and done....

I have been through the loss of property before, and by the time you pay out on the deductables, and fight the insurance company on an equal replacement, sometimes it is a big hassle to get through. It is still gonna cost your buddy out of pocket expenses he/she probably really needs for other uses unless he/she was prepared financially. Good luck to him/her. OBS...

The United Methodist Congress on Evangelism is scheduled in NO for Jan 3-6 at the sheraton on Canal Street. I hope they do not move it to another city as the wife and I are taking the SWC/CNO to get there and we are to stay in the Doubletree about two blocks south (to get reward points). But my point is, that the city will need income as soon as possible, yes the Amtrak and other rail employees as well as hotels, cruise lines, the casino etc. I hope the conventions and other gatherings don't bail on NO. Besides I really want to ride the City of NO.

It looks like NOL Amtrak employees will not work for a while due to the flooding in NOL and at this time the city can't pump the water out of the city.
I'm not an engineer but I don't understand how a city that lives below sea level on a daily basis can not have their most precious comodity, the pumps, not able to pump! Surely they plan for backup power. The city is filling and they are not pumping.

they had diesel generators as back up but the wind blew the tops off them plus they can't get to the generators to see if they can work right now 80% of NOL is under water.

With broken levees, I doubt that they would have been able to keep up with the onrushing water even if all their pumps were able to work, which they're not. Even the diesel pumping stations probably did have damage from the 100+ mph winds that were enough to peel back sections of the superdome's roof. The Amtrak station looks to be at least partly underwater, from the TV chopper shots I've seen, since it's right next to the Superdome... I think it is going to be many months before NOL is back functioning again, which is a catastrophe for all those people and for the State. Having been through three hurricanes here last year, I can understand at least a little of what they just went through, but here we didn't end up underwater afterwards, so this is going to be a months-long living nightmare for them. In oppressive heat, close to 100% humidity, and, shortly, clouds of mosquitos and all kinds of other water-borne pests and illnesses.. and that's just New Orleans. Same deal for a lot of LA, MS, GA, TN, and on up the line, just that in those other places the floodwater will recede by itself over the next few days, where it will NOT in NOL. Keep 'em all in your prayers.

I guess help is coming from all over, though. My son-in-law, a Ky Forest Ranger is on his way from our state with a goup of 60 rangers to help with downed trees on power lines, etc.

This poster's whole response is well said! But here is the most important part, folks! This is the situation each of these communities has had in the back of their minds for many years. And there was really no way anyone can "really" could prepare for something such as this!

On a side note, I have a friend up in Northern Louisianna who is a staff cordinator at a shelter they have set up at their location. The have been taking refugees from down NOL area as of yesterday who are able to travel to that location. He (my friend was employed at Amtrak some time ago) mentioned they had about four or five displaced Amtrak employees from the NOL area. They range in their crafts from OBS, station services, and a conductor. He reports all are OK, but overwhelmed as one might expect. Like all of the residents of the whole Gulf Coast just about, these NOL Amtrak emplyees are in line for hard times! Let's again, keep all in our prayers! OBS...

Let's remember all NOL Amtrak employees as long as they do not work they will not get paied untill these trains run again. Also some employees might have lost there homes.
Same thing happened in 1993 most emplyoees were out of work for a while in the Freight RR and Amtrak but a few I know did go eslewhere temperaly. Yes their houses were unscrached but many were not.

You know I have to wonder if some of the displaced employees might be making moves to Chicago or New York to staff the Crescent and CONO, since the entire CONO and part of the Crescent are staffed out of NOL, but are still partially running.

Well Foks we have a Staiton update as of Monday it wasn't flooded but it had some damage to the roof and windows.
I can't speak to the station, but as of today, the tracks leading to the station are under water. Additionally, considering that Canal St. is under water, water is pouring into the Dome which is very close to the station, I"m betting that the station does now have water inside.
