Where's that scoundrel RailFanLNK (nee RailRookie) when you need him? We could use some DECENT pics of the new station about now.
Sounds like the opening didn't go real smoothly...
"Lincoln Amtrak riders were surprised to find Tuesday morning that the train they'd been eagerly awaiting — the westbound California Zephyr that last stopped in Omaha — had been right around the corner all along.
"Expected to arrive at Lincoln's new Amtrak station at 12:15 a.m., the train didn't rumble through until just after 1 o'clock.
"Turned out, the newly installed electric railroad switches, which — as depicted in children's shows and movies almost universally — direct trains onto the proper tracks, hadn't been activated yet.
"With no power running through them, Amtrak district manager Brian Perkins said, the switches had to be turned by hand.
"And then, three times over, turned back.
"'It's all old-school right now, with the hand-switching,' said Jay Malone of Lincoln as the city's new Amtrak station was set to welcome its first train."
The JournalStar photos are useless - no exterior shots - and others found are outdated views of construction in the early stages.
