A new Amtrak Station has been opened in Lincoln, Nebraska. It has been located west of the old station and next to the new arena being constructed. Exciting news for Amtrak in Nebraska!

Where's that scoundrel RailFanLNK (nee RailRookie) when you need him? We could use some DECENT pics of the new station about now.

Sounds like the opening didn't go real smoothly...

"Lincoln Amtrak riders were surprised to find Tuesday morning that the train they'd been eagerly awaiting — the westbound California Zephyr that last stopped in Omaha — had been right around the corner all along.

"Expected to arrive at Lincoln's new Amtrak station at 12:15 a.m., the train didn't rumble through until just after 1 o'clock.

"Turned out, the newly installed electric railroad switches, which — as depicted in children's shows and movies almost universally — direct trains onto the proper tracks, hadn't been activated yet.

"With no power running through them, Amtrak district manager Brian Perkins said, the switches had to be turned by hand.

"And then, three times over, turned back.

"'It's all old-school right now, with the hand-switching,' said Jay Malone of Lincoln as the city's new Amtrak station was set to welcome its first train."

The JournalStar photos are useless - no exterior shots - and others found are outdated views of construction in the early stages.

Amtrak issued a news release today on the opening of the new station facility in Lincoln. There is a photo of the station in the news release. Nice looking station for a stop that service 11,756 passengers in FY2011.

Found a set of photos from an earlier story in the Journal Star on the station in the final stages of preparation for opening. The canopy is stated to be 800' long which indicates the new station has at least an 800' long platform.
