Took our first trip to Maine for the season last month on the Downeaster. Party of four, one in a wheelchair, all on one ticket. Arrived at the fare gates at North Station. Scanned bar code from phone at fare gate, which allowed the wheelchair passenger and the person pushing through, then closed before the other two travelers made it through. Then none of the fare gates would allow the use of that bar code to let the other two through. No staff in sight. Finally, a commuter with a monthly pass took pity on us and used her card to let the others through.

Then one of our party decided to use the restroom, which of course is outside the fare gate area, where all the benches are, so we had to find staff to let that person out, and then back in again. It still seems to me like the world's dumbest system, and the T no doubt spent a fortune putting it in to help solve a fare-evasion problem that seems dubious at best.
