The Metra Electric train that derailed early Wednesday morning near downtown Chicago was traveling about 10 mph and moving over a switch at the time, a Metra spokesman said.

No one was injured in the incident about 1 a.m. at 11th Place. About five passengers and three crew members were aboard.

The third car of the four-car train was the only car that derailed, spokesman Michael Gillis said. Only one set of the car’s two sets of wheels, known as a “truck,” left the tracks. All the cars remained on the tracks and upright.

Metra was investigating the incident, but had no official cause as of Wednesday morning. Speeding was ruled out, since the posted speed limit on that location is 20 mph, Gillis said.

George: I find the statement about the Posted Speed Limit of 20 MPH interesting since its well known that no-one ever exceeds Posted Speed Limits!! Do Metra Trains have PTC?

These PR Flacks are another breed of cat for sure!!

Metra does not have PTC yet.

The official cause of the derailment was a track defect.
