More Fares Confusion on AMTRAK Site

A few days ago was a thread about bouncing sleeper car fares. I just checked current pricing for a trip already booked for October. Very odd: Oct 18, ABQ to FUL (Tuesday) seats for 2: $126, add a roomette for $268. Return trip, Oct 22 (Saturday) fare of $252 for 2 for coach, addition of $156 for roomette. Then on the page for the trip total it shows a $124 discount on the $252 fare. This is before I add in any discounts so where did this come from? The 'discount' now makes it the regular price for 2, $128.00. Anyone know what this is and what it's supposed to accomplish? Give you a 'discount' to get the normal price? Although the roomette is cheaper.

When you purchase a sleeping compartment, the coach fare is reduced to the lowest bucket. That's the "discount" that you're seeing.

Ahh..good to know!! So the way out has higher bucket sleeper and lower bucket coach fare, while the date for return has lower bucket sleeper and higher bucket coach :unsure:

Pretty much, but on the return, if you were actually purchase a sleeper, you would get low bucket sleeper AND low bucket coach.
