I'm two days away from picking vacation at work and have a major trip planned from LNK-CHI-NYC-WAS-CHI-LNK. I have been all geared up to take Acela from NYP to WAS until I priced it. To take Acela over a regional train for 4 of us, it was a difference of $476.00. To take Acela First Class it was a difference of almost $900! Acela First Class was like $1128 for 4 of us in First Class. We found a train called the Carolinan that cost $248.00 for all four of us and was only 30 minutes longer in trip duration. So what gives? I was fairly pysched up to take Acela and knew it was more expensive and even thought of going "first class" to "go in style" but for the cost difference was HUGE! So what is the downsides, upsides to my predicament? Our trip is very budget oriented and we are staying in hostels in NYC and in DC. So its hard for me to fathom the expense of Acela when I saw only a 30 minute difference in arrival time to WAS. Enlighten me please! Thanks!
