I was curious if anyone knows the answer to this but I was thinking about it today. Take for example that a train with two locomotives suffers a lets say prime mover failure in the main locomotive. Brakes and trucks are in good operating condition. Can the lead locomotive via MU continue to run the train as a cab control unit with all power and HEP coming from the secondary locomotive?
Also take the situation in reverse. If the secondary locomotive experiences a prime mover failure, can the lead locomotive provide HEP and tractive effort with the second locomotive placed in a HEP pass-through mode?
