I just received the following advisory, which is a change from normal practice, from Amtrak:
Please be advised that due to the high volume of travel expected for the Breeders Cup event at the Del Mar Race Track on November 3rd and November 4th all Surfliner trains will be reserved seating. The reservation you currently have is good for the specific train and date you have reserved. If you would like to change trains you must change your reservation to reflect the new train you will be traveling on. Your ticket will not be valid on any other train other than the one you are reserved for.
