One of the few remaining Phase IV Genesis units, #82, is currently on the Hiawatha (Monday, it should be on the 330/331/334/335/338/339/342 rotation, for any Chicago-area folks that want to have a look). I rode it today on train 336 from MKE to MKA, for my first visit to the new station.

While waiting, a northbound CP freight went through. Then 335 was held south of the station for 8 to come through (lucky me). Train 8 was loungeless today, with a coach-cafe in its stead. Train 7(23) left Chicago without a lounge, and was supposed to get one in Portland (33000 had been bad-ordered a few weeks ago, was sent to Seattle on a hospital train to be rewheeled, and went back to Portland on train 11). However, 28(24)'s lounge was bad-ordered for *another* wheel problem, so 33000 was added to that one instead. (And, incidentally, 33000 derailed in the Chicago coach yard last night, so Amtrak got a whopping one trip out of those wheels).

Anyway, 335 came through with AMTK 80 in the lead, in desperate need of new paint.

On Friday, I headed down to Chicago on 332, returning on 341. I also rode Metra Electric from Randolph to Blue Island, and the CTA Purple Line from Davis to Washington/Wells.

Notes:

Horizon 54048 was recently remanufactured, and has a nice interior, with a blue linoleum floor with a marble pattern, as well as blue walls and a blue overhead rack. However, the car number did not appear anywhere on the inside.

335(27) had the same trainset as my Friday trains, but with a different engine, cabbage, and 54578 replaced with long-distance coach 51501 (the former 54070, with the outline of the old number still visible on the exterior of the car).

32051 on the Empire Builder was recently remanufactured (according to OTOL).

AMTK 80 was in desperate need of new paint. The Phase V paint scheme was peeling, dirty, rusted, etc. It was in far worse condition than sister unit 82's paint scheme, even though the latter's paint was far older.

I actually caught a brief glimpse of #82 on Saturday. A friend and I took the Milwaukee North Metra line down to Union Station in order to wander around down town. As we were pulling into Union Station, #82 was at the head of Hiawatha #333. I missed the number of the Phase V unit on the other end, but this consist did have two Genesis engines instead of the usual Genesis engine and ex-F40 cabbage. As much as I've grown to like Phase V, Phase IV still looks better, IMHO.
