Ran across this news item in Railway Age discussing a firm purchasing the tooling and assets of Colorado Railcar with intent of keeping the Diesel Multi Unit cars in production. Not Amtrak, but since other passenger carriers are using these thought it interesting. Link below:

Dear god, why? They are antiques. Even Pullman's last order used stainless steel!

That's the recipe for success right there. Take the disadvantages of the SPV2000 (excessive complication, underpowered) - remove its advantages (Budd's vaunted construction quality, stainless steel durability, light weight of monocoque design) and add excessively high center of gravity (Bi-levels.) and you get the design they are apparently wanting to preserve- for reasons that completely and totally elude me.
