Rebooking a Bucket Drop

I'm booked in a Roomette on the Sunset Limited in March at a medium-low bucket fare. I got an Amsnag fare alert the other day that the bucket had dropped, although it was back up by the time I checked (one of y'all beat me to it, obviously!). But that brings up the question: What is the best way to request rebooking at a lower fare when the price drops, without risking losing your current fare altogether? Any pitfalls to avoid? And how to respond when the telephone agent says It Can't Be Done?

Last time it happened to me, I just booked the new ticket, then cancelled the old one.

The most popular answer is to call back and "MODIFY" (not cancel the reservation)!
