Am on the CZ in mid-march to Reno, arriving 7:30am ish according to the current schedule. Will be flying out later that day to Phoenix.

2 questions--can I store my bags at the station for a few hours and do some sightseeing and try my luck?

Second question--transportation to the airport from downtown, is a cab most practical. I will have 1 bag on wheels and my golf clubs.

Thanks for any info.
 
When I was in Reno in July, there was no bag storage in the station. A group of us went to Harrah's for lunch and we stored our luggage with a bellman there.

I do not know about cabs.
 
Don't know for sure about bag storage but I would guess most of the hotels would hold your bags if you're doing anything on property. Most of the casino hotels have shuttles to the airport; Harrah's is relatively strict about who gets to use them, but I've almost never been refused a ride on the Silver Legacy shuttles. With luggage, a hotel shuttle or a cab are probably the best options-it would be less than 10 minutes' trip. City buses also are available; routes 19 or 12 will take you there, and both start downtown about a block away from the train station.

I took the Harrah's shuttle to the airport and got a ride back. It was to rent a car ($14/day!) at the airport, which was way cheaper than anything downtown. When I mentioned this to the outbound driver, he said that he has passengers doing that all the time. While we were staying at Harrah's neither driver asked whether or not we were staying there or were otherwise customers of Harrah's.

Still - if you've got bags stored there and have tipped the bellhop to get them out, then I'd say you're a customer and entitled to a ride to the airport. They say it's for "Harrah's patrons only", although they don't specify if that means hotel stay, gambling, dining, shopping, or just storing your bags at bell service.

I've taken the Harrah's Shuttle before as well when renting vehicles at the airport/returning them going to/from the station. Most of the casinos will have a shuttle and many do not question who uses them so I have never had an issue. You can also patronize the casino as well to use the baggage storage facilities there.
 
I don't know if I'd count on bag storage at the station even if they had it. There's only one train westbound, one eastbound, and buses. I've gone in for a look and the staff wasn't there once. I don't think they have enough traffic to justify multiple employees like a major station, so they could be on extended break about the time you might want to get you bags back.

I've been to the station during open hours. The agent was gone and there was a sign at the window saying that he would be back. I've heard that quite often the agents will just take breaks because there typically won't be any customers they need to deal with between trains or buses leaving/arriving.

A relatively busy station like Emeryville (CZ, CS, CC, and SJ) will always have someone at the ticket/baggage window, and can have up to four windows open if it's really busy. When I've checked out the Reno station, it looks like a place that's pretty much sleepy during open hours - at least until just before or after a train arrives.
