maybe the normal line has some trackwork? That other line takes extra time to move around the yard...
 
Maybe the normal way was full with freight and so it was easier for the chief to go around
 
Just a wild guess here.

But don't crews have to work diversionary routes from time to time just for the purpose of maintaining route knowledge so that they know what to do should the detour ever be required in earnest?
