I am getting off a cruise ship with a girlfriend and will be taking the San Diego Train back to LA station. We will have at least 4 large suitcase plus 2 carryon bags. What type of luggage racks are available on the San Diego part of the trip????

Wow, that's a lot of stuff. The Pacific Surfliner cars that you'll be aboard have overhead baggage racks that are pretty generous, and there's also storage space on the lower level. But with so much, why not just check the bags? Checked baggage service is available at both San Diego and L.A. Let Amtrak do the heavy lifting.

You can certainly check your bags in SAN. They will take up the same space as if you carry them on yourself. Let them do the work as Whooz said.

Personally, I find the overhead racks pretty unspacious. There's usually plenty of space in the luggage racks at the ends of the cars on the upper level.

*If* you can handle off your bags, I'd suggest just carrying them on. This will avoid all of the ballyhoo of checking and then claiming the bags; when you step off the train, you'll be ready to go where ever.

Yes I checked the train the travel agent has us on and I can check baggage at San Diego. I was not sure that I could check baggage. I always take advantage of the Baggage car now with checking my luggage.

You can check 3 bags each and each carry 2 bags on. But be careful the checked bags do not weigh over 50lbs each. There were four us coming back from camping on the beach, we checked 12 bags at Oceanside to go to LA. I weighed the bags with a portable travel scale, and thought they were all good. A couple of bags were over by a pound or two. They were flatly refused by the counter agent. No suggestion to redistribute the weight or any help whats so ever. I quickly pulled some things out and stuck them in one of our 5 carry-on bags, and made weigh-in. If you are not checking the max of 6 bags, you might think about bring an empty cheap cloth duffle bag so you can redistribute the weigh for check-in and then put in back in your suitcases when you reach your destination.
