Starwood has upped the new cardholder bonus on their American Express card to 30k points, 10k after first purchase, 20k after $5,000 charged in first three months. The $65 annual fee is waved the first year.

They often make this offer in the summer. These points can be transfered 1:1 to AGR.

This is a really great deal if you have the credit to get the card and can afford to make the spend without paying interest charges. As far as earning AGR points, I'd say that it's second only to the Chase Sapphire offer, or the Chase Ink if you have a small business.

Once upon a time you could get a 5k bonus for transfering 20k SPG points to AGR (as is the case for airlines), but that went away after too many inquiries asking if AGR was considered an airline program. Asked often enough, SPG decided that Amtrak wasn't an airline. There's a moral there: don't call attention to yourself!

Also, this program used to be churnable every year or two. That has apparently changed, and now you only get one bite of the apple.
