Okay , so for my staycation I went with a friend to Tahoe for the day, since I’d never been and I wanted to see Lake Tahoe and what was along the way.

We got to a cool little city called Trukee and we happened to be there just before 3pm and guess what showed up? That’s right you loyal schedule book readers, the EB California Zephyr! What’s more exciting than randomly seeing a big old Amtrak train? How about seeing the CZ with two old pretty train cars hooked up to the back of it! Both with “CALIFORNIA ZEPHYER” titles on the side! Did I mention that one was a domed observation end car too? I’ve seen pictures of those since I was a kid but never seen one in real life! It was a real treat for me and my friend.

Sorry for the picture quality but I took it with my blackberry.

Now, can anyone give me the skinny on who that was or if it was an excursion train? I asked around at the visitor agency and they said that they sometimes have excursion trains there but not often. Truckee was a cute little town and not far from Tahoe, and the drive from Sacramento to Truckee was amazing, I would imagine that they have them pretty often.

Any info would be great.

I learned a lot about the area. I was surprised to find out that the story I heard as a child of a train getting stranded on a mountain was not only a very true story but took place here in my new back yard of California and the Donner pass… the Donner Story is a whole other ball of yarn though!

If you haven’t been to Truckee, you should check it out! I really enjoyed the drive up the 80 and back the 50 to Sacramento.

this is awesome! thank you!

You are most welcome. That would be a real fun ride, if it was affordable. Pretty pricey. But very nice.

So by the time I was done scrambling through my stacks of Trains Unlimited brochures, plus several other train tour group's info, Sunchaser already had posted the info! I must get more organized! But then life would be so dull. Anyway Philzy, your picture was great and I enjoyed seeing that train. Thank you for posting it. Also, you are right about Truckee. It is a great little town. Glad you enjoyed your "staycation".
