We are traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans on the Sunset Limited. We are seniors and one is handicap and can not climb up to the top bump. Is the bottom bed large enough for two average size people to sleep there. Do they have rubber mattress that you can place on the floor? Don't have have bedrails to keep someone from falling off the top bunk bed. My husband is a rough sleeper, and he tossest and turns during the night.

Danawana,

In a roomette, the smaller of Amtrak's accomodations, no. It would be an extremly tight fit to put 2 people into the lower bed. In a Bedroom, the larger of Amtrak's accomodations, it wouldn't be a problem at all. Of course in the Bedroom, you get a nice ladder that makes it much easier to get into the top bunk, unlike the roomette. Additionally, in a Bedroom, while not recommended; it would be possible to position the mattress for the upper bunk on the floor with one end tucked under the lower bunk for the feet and the other end sticking out. It is not possible to do this in a roomette.

Finally, the upper bunks in both rooms come with safety straps to keep one from falling out.

No, two adults really cannot fit into a roomette lower. The bed is only 28" wide, and is hemmed in on both sides. As to the top bunk, there is heavy duty nylon netting (essentially a net made of seat belt-like material) that keeps you from falling out.

There is essentially NO floor space when the bed is down. The bed takes most all the room, although there is a small space, about 18" x 6" by the door when the bed is down.

Another option beside the bedroom is to purchase 2 roomettes. The price of 2 roomettes is often cheaper than 1 Bedroom.

Aloha

Consider the "handicap" room it is large. one drawback there is only one per sleeper. Sorry I am not familiar with the bed sizes.

The Handicap room on a Superliner has the same size beds as a roomette, and the same arrangement of upper and lower. The difference is the room itself is larger (entire width of the car), but most of that room is taken up with the disabled toilet arrangement (bars, room to maneuver a wheelchair, etc).
