This is not related to the other thread posted about scheduled maintenance in mid-March causing the Sunset Limited to be cancelled east of New Orleans. This is an unplanned disruption due to a freight derailment.

As per a post on the All Aboard list (on a Yahoo Group), one round trip of the SUNSET LIMITED has been annulled east of New Orleans on account of a CSX derailment just east of New Orleans.

Train 2(2), which left Los Angeles on Sunday 3/2, only operated as far as New Orleans, arriving there the evening of Tuesday, 3/4. It will be turned there to become Train 1(4), the scheduled Tuesday departure from Orlando -- but it will originate in New Orleans for points west on Wednesday, 3/5.

That means one Superliner trainset is marooned east of the derailment, most likely remaining in Sanford, FL; it should leave Orlando as Train 1(6) on Thursday 3/6 (if repair of the track is complete).

Passengers from Trains 2(2) and 1(4) are being taken by bus to and from the train in New Orleans. (Bustitution is taking place because this train had been scheduled to operate; when the planned closure takes place, there most likely will be no substitute bus service.)

1800 feet of track are reportedly damaged.
