After hearing about folks leaving things related to their late railfan family members on board the train I began to wonder what else people have left or found on while on board. It also reminded me of a thread I saw once about all the sorts of things that people left and found in hotels. I've left plenty of things on planes and shuttles and in hotels by accident. Cell phones, jackets, chargers and the like. I've also left a few things on purpose. Like sticking rare coins or other odd trinkets in places that are unlikely to be seen and/or hard to reach. I sometimes wonder who if anyone finds them, or if they are doomed to remain there forever.

I've also found some weird stuff as well, desirable or undesirable, depending on your point of view. Everything from cash to magazines to house keys to gift cards. I actually haven't left much on trains specifically. A phone charger, hotel key, a thumb drive and the like. One thing I remember leaving on a train was a stuffed animal (a lamb) from my very early childhood many, many years ago. I haven't found much yet either, which may mean I'm just not looking hard enough. Then again, it may actually be a good thing considering what some people are apparently leaving behind these days.

I do remember one roomette with a speaker which was stuck on maximum volume. This got so annoying that eventually I got up to see what could be done. I used a key to unscrew the speaker grill and a stash of old pamphlets and booklets came raining down on me. Timetables and adverts and whatnot. Apparently someone else had the same idea I did and had already jammed the speaker full of old paperwork in an effort to muffle it. I guess I could have kept some of that old stuff but all I wanted was some peace and quiet, so I shoved it all back in there and added some more for good measure.

So what have YOU left or found while on the train?

Was it a mistake? Was it intentional?

Would it creep other passengers out if they knew what it was? :help:

By mistake and, yes, creepy. An implanted front tooth worked loose on me while on the Meteor and it somehow got tossed out in the garbage on board. I actually spent quite some time trying to fish it out of the garbage bag with the help of the car attendant, to no avail. Immediate and expensive trip to the dentist. I said it was creepy (and gross!).

The only thing I can think of that I left behind (accidentally) was a cassette tape of a trip I'd taken to Seattle in June of 2010. Somehow the tape had to have fallen out of my camera bag while I was on the Cascades from Seattle to Portland. I've been to Seattle four times since then, so whatever was on that tape I'm sure I've recorded many times over.

The only thing I've ever found was an Ipod I found underneath the seat in front of me. This was on the EB enroute from Spokane to Seattle last summer. Once I found it I promptly turned it in to the conductor. He thanked me for my honesty. As I told him, the Ipod was hot pink, and pink isn't my color anyway. That gave him his laugh for the day.

The only thing that comes to mind that I've left was a suitcase...

In 1986, on Halloween :p no less, Mrs. Crockett and I took the Maple Leaf from ALB to TWO in coach for her brother's wedding. We had a great time, but arrived into TWO a bit late, which meant we had zero extra time to make the family dinner on the eve of the big event. Rushing out of the train and station, we got to the subway before I realized we only had one of our two suitcases. I left Mrs. Crockett with the one and ran back to the station. It was probably a good 15 minutes since we deboarded by the time I got to the track, but I managed to find a VIA conductor who escorted back to the train, which fortunately was still at the platform. We went to the car, and sure enough, there was the suitcase. As I grabbed it the train jolted and started to move. The conductor shouted "Let's GO!" and we rushed from the center of the car to the door. He jumped off, told me to hand him the suitcase, which I did, and then he told me to jump - we were starting to pick up a bit of speed - which I did, with no problem. In hindsight, I don't remember if he had a radio on him, but I'm thinking not, because he said: "That was close. We almost went for a ride to the yards!"

Oh, and then there was the time on the Montrealer when I was heading back to college... But that is another story... :D

If one were to deliberately stash an item for some AU'er down the track to seek out and discover, where would be a good place in a Superliner roomette? A bedroom? It would have to someplace that would be unlikely for Amtrak's cleaners to see and remove, but not require a total dismantling of the room to stash and retrieve. Any suggestions?

We could make this our version of a secret handshake!

Yes, in the soft pocket storage bin for the upper bunk in the roomettes. The junk I've found in those makes me believe that they seldom get cleaned.

This sounds like geocaching on the train! Sounds fun.

Last summer, on the Empire Builder, one of our traveling companions left his iPod Touch in the soft pocket storage bin in the upper bunk. It was never turned in to lost and found.

The soft pocket in the upper bunk is a good place, I always stick my hand in cautiuosly and see what's in there before dropping my glasses in for the night. OTOH, I have a boxfull of keychain flashlights left over from a business venture,I usually drop one in that soft pocket at night and leave it there after we leave. hopefully they have been made good use of :)

I have never found anything strange before. But the one roomette we had on the Capitol Limited had a broken speaker, didn't work at all.....
