Imho Amtrak needs to develop some type of algorithm for determining his to rebook, support sleeping car passengers when a train gets canceled.
Things to consider:
1. Distance person is traveling. A person traveling overnight should be given priority over Some one traveling just to Reno.
2. How far in advance was a ticket purchased. Months ahead should receive priority over last minute bookings.
3. Amtrak rewards status could be used as a tie breaker. Amount paid is another tie breaker.
Under this algorithm I probably would have been rebooked on the next days 6. Some buying a room to Reno would have been bumped back to coach.
No system is perfect. But this would be better than just dumping an entire train load of passengers and saying goodbye and good luck.
A similar system could be used for coach passengers. Those traveling furthest get first dibs on next days train.
