Jet fuel, kerosene, home heating oil and diesel fuel are variations on a theme. Once upon a time they were just about one and the same, if not the same. The different fuels have become more specialized over the years to take into account temperature ranges, especially low temps (solidification of parafins), altitude concerns (low atmospheric pressuresand temperatures), and sulphur content (emissions). Turbines, diesels, furnaces, and lamps will run on all the grades, but not necessarily up to par. Extreme applications (e.g. SR-71) excepted.
Noise is a design consideration. It's an air intake and exhaust configuration thing.
