$24,000 in such a short period of time so many years ago?

He must have had a bunch of "hot" cash fare receipt books.

I remember a few unusual cash fares that I paid. In one instance I tried to pay with a credit card. The conductor offered a substantially reduced fare if I paid with cash. In the other instance, the conductor took my cash and never punched out a receipt.

I wonder how often this happens, conductors stealing cash fares?

Allen--

Yes, it does sound to me like there's a little fishy business going on there. You should have always gotten a receipt, and the fare shouldn't have been any different, either way, cash or credit.

However, since you weren't in any danger of being in trouble, sounds like you got a deal out of it.
