Upgrades on train

As part of our trip from Austin to South Carolina, we are traveling on a Viewliner, the Crescent from New Orleans to Greenville S.C. We already have a sleeper from San Antonio to New Orleans but I'm beginning to think it would be nice to have a place to take a nap during the 15 hour trip to Greenville. How often are upgrades available and if so, what would I expect to pay onboard? The sleeper is $150 on the website for that portion which when you count getting three meals for two, isn't to bad...Bill

Two ways- check on Amtrak reservation website and check for any available room a day or two before the departure trip. If there's one available, call the Amtrak agent and ask them for upgrade.

Other way is to ask the conductor on board and ask if there's room available.
