There was a round of applause at the Amtrak station Wednesday morning when a group of 23 mission trip-goers stepped off a train that was nearly 24 hours late.
The 17 members of Sacred Heart's youth group and six chaperones heading back from Fort Defiance, Ariz., were delayed because of a washed-out track in Texas. A relieved group of parents and siblings greeted the crew that spent a week painting houses and ministering on a Navajo reservation.
Laura Stelly was waiting at the station for her daughter Allison.
"It was a sleepless night," she said with a laugh. "Just waiting by the phone."
Tanya McCaulley had been waiting at the station since 6 a.m., which is when she was told the group would arrive.
"My husband said I always wanted to take a train ride," she said. "I don't think so anymore."
