This video is very instructive on many levels. Trains looks to be moving at least 50 or 60mph when it hits the auto, yet by the time the last car exits the video frame, it has slowed considerably, maybe 25mph or less... all in just the length of the train.

I had reservations out of Dallas tomorrow (Wednesday April 27) on 421 to Los Angeles. Amtrak called me this morning and said train would be cancelled, no alternate transportation provided.

Yes, I'll be in the 422 portion of the train (car 2230)... these rooms are usually hard to come by so close to the departure date, that's why I was so surprised at the availability just 1 day before departure. It'll be interesting to see how full the 422 sleeper is.

On a whim, I canceled my return plane ticket from LA to Dallas for Monday and booked a roomette on the Sunset leaving LA tomorrow (9/3/06). Not only was I surprised I could get a roomette with barely 24 hours notice, but there must be quite a few roomettes available on this train... the price...

I rode the Eagle from Dallas to Los Angeles last week... The train was almost 3 hours late into Dallas on Nov. 14th and we lost at least another hour between Dallas and Fort Worth due to a broken rail... resulting in a very late arrival into San Antonio... I think around 3:00am or 4:00am...

I'll be traveling to Chicago at the end of the month, more specifically to the Westin O'Hare hotel in Rosemont near the airport. Is it reasonably easy to get from Union Station in downtown Chicago to the Westin? I seem to recall some sort of commuter rail line station very close to the hotel...

To get to Dallas via SW Chief, I take the Chief to from LAX to Galesburg, IL and then take the shuttle to Springfield, IL where I catch the Texas Eagle.

BNSF mile markers are posted every mile, UP has markers every quarter mile. They are white with black numerals, not very large, except for some on the UP which are leftover from the Southern Pacific days.
