Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Horizon cars were originally intended to be converted into long distance coaches once the new bilevels were delivered but that may be far off in the future....

Union Pacific Leader for Amtrak #6(04)

Generally the class 1s have a horsepower hour sharing program for run through freights etc. Where any imbalances can be repaid by loaning locomotives for the HP rating for the required number of operating hours or by paying the cash value of those horsepower hours quarterly or annually. I would...

    Work at New York Penn

With this lasting for two months it would be worth while to break up the 4th trainset for added capacity on other trains....

    Work at New York Penn

Not to mention unexpectedly changing equipment messes up the reservations due to different capacities of the cars. There was an oddity where the Crescent was made up of Superliner spares in New Orleans when the southbound didn't arrive in time to turn for the north bound. The train truncated in...

Any idea what the extra Crescent set will be used for?

    Work at New York Penn

Will the Crescent go from 4 to 3 consists during the truncation, there is plenty of time for same day turnaround in DC eliminating a trainset?

NS Derailment near Anniston, AL (5/19)

I live about 3 mi from here. Preliminary reports have NS train 154 doing 55mph when the train separated after picking a switch. The head end of the train did continue for a good distance before the brakes stopped them after the lines separated. It appears Amtrak is busing passengers between...

    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

According to Amtrak reports they are only off by 6% from the break even point, surely if push comes to shove 6% could be temporarily made up for in one way or another.... 6% "making America great" surcharge on all tickets with a message about making small sacrifices to bigly support the most...

    P42DC HEP

The # of cars isn't the limit, it is all to do with the amperage in the electrical system of the train. Amps=Volts/Load. If the amps get too high because the load on the system is too great the system starts overheating, this is prevented by circuit breakers or fuses. For example 5 diner/cafe...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

What's the likelihood of 8400 or another viewliner getting an interior set up to be used as an expanded cafe? If the Star is permanently dinerless an improved Viewliner cafe would be a good move.

Who sets speed restrictions through towns?

I know some towns here in Alabama passed ordinances to limit train speed. However the railroads only followed these as a courtesy. NS removed all of the XX mph restrictions for the headend entering a certain crossing a few years ago. Now those ordinances are essentially ignored because the...

    Media Blitz

Wonder if they could classify food losses as advertising expense and go back to the days of good dining and cafe car service?

Crescent's Annual Truncation due to trackwork

This happens every year and I always question it...... NS still manages to push it's 20 or so daily freights through this section while the maintenance blitz is occurring.... That always makes me wonder why this is the only train that is regularly annulled rather than just having a service alert...

    Possible CP-NS merger and Amtrak

On further reading this sounds like a very serious proposal to create a true coast to coast transcon with the port of Vancouver taking some of the pressure off of the port of long beach.... The real issue will be government approval.....
