    Amtrak + Olympics

When L.A. had the Olympics in 1984,Amtrak had no extra service. RTD rented a lot of extra busses, though.

Meals - what are sleeper passengers entitled to?

I had always understood that beef pork or chicken could be BBQed. Shows what this guy stuck in So Cal knows. Now that the L.A. county fair is going on I am getting plenty of BBQ since I have a season pass. :)

Senate passes measure to allow gun transport on Amtrak

It's about time. Guns are allowed in checked baggage ONLY! The owner has no access to his gun(s) until retrieving luggage at the end of the trip. Proud to be a non gun owning member of the NRA :) .

9/11 thread. Were there any members who were riding trains that day ?

I had just gooten to work on the bus,and a lady ttold me,"Did you hear what happened? Someone flew a plane into the World Trade Center." At the time I thought some guy had flown his Cessna into the building. She then said" no, it was terrorists. They flew an airliner into the building." We all...

    Maricopa to Phoenix Transportation

There has been talk about UP reopening the line west of Phoenix and the Sunset returning to that route. I hope this happens as Phoenix definately needs rail service.

    Missing out on western scenery

Amtrak used to have a Washington-New York set out sleeper on its overnight train between Washington and Boston. One could board the car in NYP in the evening, which would be picked up southbound somewhere around 1-2 AM. This also worked northbound as your car would be set out and you would wake...

    Steak Lovers Beware!

I had the flatiron steak on the "Tehachapi" Starlight last January, and it was good, but still not quite as good as the New York strip steak Amtrak served many years ago.

Train got in early, but we waited for dinner before leaving?

You read these posts long enough, you see everything! I can't imagine anyone picking the UP through Wyoming over the D&RGW through Colorado. "THROUGH the Rockies, not around them!!!"

    Riding in a Thunderstorm

I was riding the eastbound Texas Eagle through Arkansas one night watching a thunderstorm far off to the east. I watched the storm for many miles. The worst thunderstorm I saw while travelling, was on a Greyhound bus one night in Arizona, between San Diego and Tucson.

how much different were the "good old days"?

The longest train train ride I took before Amtrak was on the San Joaquin and Coast Daylights in 1961,when I was 9. This was before the dreaded Automats,so we had a real diner, which was probably a Coffee Shop car. I remember having pancakes for breakfast on the San Joaquin Daylight. At this time...

    Refurbished California Superliner

I rode to Santa Barbara in a refurbished Superliner car last Monday. I didn't go downstairs to check out the restrooms. I don't remember the name either, but it was a Grove series.
