    Long Distance Train Comfort Opinions

I like the roomette best for the same reasons as Lonestar648.

    Long.distance trips faster than driving

I drove my daughter out to Seattle when she moved there. It took us 3 full days of driving to get there. I took the train home. Left at 5pm on day 1 and arrived at 8am on day 3. Much better. I told my husband I would never drive through Montana again. Flat and endless. We were able to take the...

    California Zephyr Leaving Denver West

The atmosphere in the Observation car is like one big happy group enjoying the journey up the mountains together. People point out animals loud enough for everyone to notice and when someone calls something out on the opposite side you can just move or turn your head and take a look. If you are...

    Lower Level Seating

Yes, the stairs can be tricky when the train is moving. The trick is when you get off the train at a fresh air stop immediately go upstairs to the observation car while the train is still stopped and just gaining speed. Definitely bring a pillow, blanket and a cooler with food & beverages...

    Train Ettiquette

Sis, While in your coach seats, that is every ones own private space to relax, live & sleep. The Sightseer Lounge Car is the place to go to socialize. Bring games that are easily played with others. There is no running on the train or next to the train at fresh air stops. (I was yelled at by a...

    Coolers

No problem. Bring a cooler. It will be handy at your destination. We travel in a sleeper and bring a cooler on wheels filled with beer and leave it in the luggage area downstairs.

Bunches of newbie questions - Empire Builder - Milwaukee to Seattle

Lot's of good advice about checking amsnag & using points to get a sleeper. You just don't get a good night's sleep in coach with all the people noises etc. So, if you can figure out a way to do that, it's the best, all meals are included. Don't forget, your vacation starts the minute you step...

Last week was probably our last LD trip on Amtrak

We just got back from a Great trip on the Zephyr & the staff going out was superb and the staff on our return trip were sub par. Especially when we just had the best possible crew on the trip out. Anyways, yes the mattresses are rock hard compared to our sleep number bed set at 25. We just deal...

    Your funniest Amtrak story?

At a regularly scheduled "fresh air" stop on the Zephyr last week, the passenger 2 doors down from us in a bedroom was complaining about everything since we got on the train yesterday. As I was standing outside in Glenwood Springs, 2 uniformed police officer's spoke with the conductor and...

    Bro-cation 2015: DEN/EMY/PDX/WFH/MSP

I totally agree on the service part of it. We took the Zephyr from Osceola to Sacramento and back last week. On the way out the service was GREAT. We were greeted when we got on the train. She made many announcements about stops and what to see in addition to the conductor. Are baskets were...

    First Sleeper Trip! SLC- FTW

Great trip report. I enjoyed it immensely and was just as excited for you as you were. I travelled in a roomette while 12 of my cousins etc. were in coach. We were delayed 6+ hours, I was soooo happy! I got to see the area's that we always go through in the dark. I had to stay in my roomette to...

First trip in 4 days, MEM-CHI-ABQ, advice on what to expect?

You don't need to bring blankets. They are provided in sleepers. Dressing in layers is correct. I prefer a zippy to a pullover because just going from your room to the diner to the lounge car will be different temperatures. Definitely have a hat & gloves and either a heavy fleece or wind proof...

St. Paul, MN First Class Lounge?

The MN History Museum in downtown St. Paul would be a fabulous place to check out until 5pm. After that walk over to the light rail and take it all the way until the end in Minneapolis and get off in downtown Mpls. The Loon Café is right on the corner or there are a lot more places to choose...
