Amtrak Phase VII livery discussion

Apparently there is a large plan to implement Amtrak's new phase VII design on a lot of the equipment which they just unveiled a P42 painted that way - so all the Viewliners may end up eventually getting painted the same way.

I believe we have another thread on this and it does seem all cars will be getting this as you suggest, at least according to this report:

Indeed. Though note that there is no major Red other than the thin Red base band on the passenger cars. Only locomotives and Cab Cars have the large Red field around the Cab. Passenger cars look something like:

We’ll, it looks ok but….

-Has to be higher cost to paint the whole car and use 4 colors
-Will show dirt and dings

Makes much more sense to stay with stainless steel with accent paint. Phase IV was my favorite.

I can't imagine what the superliners and amfleets will look like with Phase VII paint. No more stainless steel look?

IMO, it will be the paint strip along the center of the cars. Then again the Pacific Cars are mostly painted.

The dark looks fairly good. However, heating and cooling darker cars can always be a problem in extreme temperatures. The US scare airplane paint jobs did not last long.

I agree. I don’t see Amtrak painting entire superliners at this stage.

Oh, I do not like the second option! I love the sleek stainless steel look and would hate it if that's lost.

Well, however they choose to apply Phase VII to the older equipment, it’s sure to be a radical departure from the status quo, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Second P42 in Phase VII AMTK 82 is the second engine on the westbound California Zephyr that left Chicago today. I caught this Amtrak #5(12) east of Ottumwa, Iowa. With the first Phase VII P42 174 in Denver on the ski train set, I wonder if there will a chance to see both units at the same time tomorrow.

AMTK 82 is now on the front of Amtrak #5(18). If it sticks with the train, it should be the first full run of the California Zephyr with a Phase VII unit leading.

The newest Phase VII P42, AMTK 138, is making its first run in its new paint leading Amtrak #5(12). The other engine is AMTK 82, which I believe makes for the first time a train is powered solely by Phase VII P42s.
