    Snack Coaches

I am curious to know if the 35xxx series is still in service? There are only about a dozen of these, I understand. I have never seen the interior of a Snack Coach in person. I am guessing, the lower level (where seating would normally be) acts as the "cafe" so to speak? I heard that a few of...

    H.E.P.

Forgive me if this subject has been brought up prior but, why is the Head-End Power (H.E.P.) occasionally shut down momentarily at certain station stops. Maybe for no more than 30 seconds and then it's brought back online. Seems to happen at engineer crew change points or stations with a...

Rough Summer for the California Zephyr

It's been a rather rough summer for the California Zephyr and it's passengers. The CZ has either been severely delayed or detoured most of the Summer due to a very rainy season in Iowa. Two and a half feet of rain is crazy! From slow orders (soft track beds) to fallen trees and washouts...

    Zephyr Delay and Connecting Services

I will be on the Zephyr very soon! Very excited to take Amtrak, as I haven't been on the train since the late 90s. I will be connecting to the Capitol in Chicago. The CZ has been (on average) arriving into Chicago very close to the departure time of the CL. Here is my question. How late...

    Guaranteed Connection

I will be making a trip via Amtrak in August. It's been well over a decade, since I have last been on the train. I am very excited! This will be my first trip however, changing trains for my destination. Does anyone know if the California Zephyr to/from Capital Limited is a guaranteed...

    F40 Question

If I remember correctly, the F40 had a strobe light above the cab. Was there a specific reason behind this & did all the F40s have strobe lights?

    Texas Eagle Question

Why does Amtrak provide the TE with only one pony? Doesn't it put a "strain" on the engine, as it also has to provide HEP? I know it's been a few years, but when did Amtrak decide to only use one engine to power the TE? Most LD trains have two for the duration of the trip. Does the CONO only...

    CONO

Does anyone have an old timetable or even information pertaining to the CONO, when it had thru-cars that ran from Carbondale to St. Louis? Or was it KC? Which cities did the thru-cars serve? Also, what was the typical consist and what train numbers were used? I believe this was before the...

    CZ Nebraska

Hey railfans, I am rather curious as to what causes the California Zephyr to always lose time in Nebraska, particularly eastbound. Isn't this double track on BNSF territory? For example, number six can be on time from SLC to DEN, however after Denver and eastbound it tends to lose time.

    Amtrak Timetables

Does anyone have a general idea of when the fall timetables will come out? It used to be the day we changed our clocks back to Standard Time.

    Eastbound California Zephyr Arrival

I rarely get the chance to see the #6 arrive because its scheduled arrival/departure time is in the morning, however today was an exception. It's 10 hours and 48 minutes late! She pulled into the station at 8:38P and her stop was very brief. Engineer crews changed and at 8:42P she was on her...

    Trains Article

There is a good article in the October issue of Trains about the maintenance facilities run by Amtrak at Beech Grove, Wilmington, and Bear. I found it rather fascinating how each shop works.

    Equipment Used on the CZ

From which train does the equipment come from used on the California Zephyr out of Chicago? The Capitol Limited?

    Superliners New Paint

Has anyone else noticed that the word SUPERLINER is missing underneath the upper level windows with the new paint scheme on the Superliners? It's been replaced with a very small version underneath the number of the car. Looks bare considering the word SUPERLINER has been there since the first...
