Any other women actively on this site?

Count me in, too - I was, like others, much more active last spring and summer as we were planning our cross-country trip. I do still read the posts often, enjoy the comments and helpful info, and dream of another Amtrak trek.

    Ticket sale!

The Amtrak page shows a list of "Selected Fares." Does this mean that the ones shown are just a sample of many other routes available in this sale -- or does it mean that only these routes have been selected for the sale?

    Favorite carry-on bag for gear?

... The backpack is out. For carry-on toiletries and a change of clothes, a small field duffel such as this CalPak Field Trip 22" Multi-Pocket Duffel Bag Well... you might check one thing further: we like Rick Steves' convertible luggage/backpack. You can carry it as a "normal" suitcase...

    Sleeping car attendant duties...

....... I can only think of a few things to explain why you did not recieve the service. First, the Superliner sleepers are very difficult to work with just one person as the attendant in that car. But with a good system in place it can be done. There are roughly eighty seven beds in the...

Locker situation at Washington Union Station?

We're traveling coach and will have a stopover in Washington for 5 or 6 hours. Are the lockers still available, or have they been shut down for security? I've Googled & found several such discussions. And if they are available, does anyone know the current cost? Thanks!

Partial refund for roomette charges in case of bustitution

Thanks, Rafi! You just confirmed that my DH was wrong and I was right. He insisted that the "alternate transportation" part is what we needed to pay attention to; I didn't agree, but in the interest of household harmony moved on from it. Guess we were both suffering from packing fatigue! NOW...

Partial refund for roomette charges in case of bustitution

Hi again, Rafi -- Currently on the Amtrak page is the following: (And of course I meant to say Wisconsin, NOT Indiana!) Service by the Empire Builder on CP Railway between St. Paul and Chicago, suspended since June 10 due to flooding in Wisconsin, has resumed using a Union Pacific detour...

Partial refund for roomette charges in case of bustitution

That's good news. We checked earlier today & saw there'd be bustitution from Chicago to I've-forgotten-where (Indiana?),so I'm glad to get your update. Thanks, Rafi.

    Taking food into observation car?

Thanks. As might be apparent from my frequency of posts today, we're about to embark on our first coast-to-coast, leaving Sunday night, returning July 10. We're better prepared now, thanks to this forum. (But could someone please come help me pack and clean up the house.... :P )

    Taking food into observation car?

I know that we can't bring our own food / drinks into the lounge - but what about the observation car? And the lounge is open to all, right? -- coach & sleeper car pax?

Hot water for tea & coffee

it made a huge difference on my trip. i had a sleeper, but you can do it in couch too. ifyour seat is by the window, you can do it right there. otherwise, you can go to the lounge. Of course! The lounge - didn't think about that. Are outlets pretty easily available there? And using your...

Hot water for tea & coffee

In a sleeper for 2 days of the outbound trip, coach on the return (I should have said that). I'm glad I asked - the restaurant comparison never occurred to me. Now assuming we are lucky enough to have an outlet at our seat, I assume it'd be okay to use it for our coil heater (IF we find it)...

Hot water for tea & coffee

We plan to take tea bags & coffee singles with us on our LD trip. Can we take our cups to the snack bar and get them filled with hot water? (Okay, a totally trivial matter, but a "yes" means we don't have to search high & low for our missing immersion coil heater :) .)

Partial refund for roomette charges in case of bustitution

Hi, all -- If Empire Builder is still having problems next week from Chicago, the point at which we get our roomette for a trip that continues out to the West Coast, will Amtrak refund part of our accommodations cost? I understand that we're still being transported, and that floods are out of...

Laptops on board - using, and keeping them secure

I'm thinking of taking my laptop on our cross-country trip (D.C. to Portland) and have two questions: (1) Are there places along the route where wireless connection is possible? (2) Are coach seats configured so that an anti-theft cable can secure the laptop when we are away from our seats? Thanks!

    Checked Baggage?

Very specific and persuasive (well, to me anyway! ;) ) Thanks, Alan.

    Checked Baggage?

I did - I knew about that from the many helpful discussions I've read here. But he didn't go for that. Maybe when he sees the size of the roomette, though, he might have second thoughts.... :P

    Checked Baggage?

We're going from Washington, D.C. - Chicago - Portland. My DH insists he's not gonna check his bag (it's a standard-sized, soft-sided airline-approved carry-on) but will pack light and keep it in the roomette with us--use it as a pillow if there's no place on the floor to put it. My question...
