    Locomotive lash-ups

Sometimes the locomotives are hooked up back-to-back, sometimes they are hooked up elephant style. Is there a logical reason to hook them up one way or the other or is it just random? Thanks in advance.

CZ Service Disruption (6/25) and more delays

I was in a sleeper on the ill-fated #6 (25). Here are some photos of the #1 locomotive (#817) spewing smoke and diesel fuel after an apparent ring failure after Provo, UT.

Empire Builder delays, westbound Capitol Limited schedule change

Hopefully, these excerpts from a news article by Bob Johnston, published August 3, 2012, are considered "fair use": After more than a month of tardiness to. . .the Empire Builder. . . Amtrak is now officially advising passengers through August 31 that they “may experience delays of...

Texas Eagle rerouted due to trackwork

August 1-9 and August 16-23: ". . .The Chicago-San Antonio Texas Eagle is being rerouted on the UP’s former Chicago & Eastern Illinois trackage through Villa Grove and Pana, Ill. Buses are substituting for most Lincoln Service trains, some connecting with the Chicago-Carbondale Illini and...

Chase Sapphire card --> AGR points

I'm not sure I understand how this works. . .once I apply for and receive a Chase Sapphire (25K points) or Preferred Sapphire (50K points) card, how do these get credited to the AGR account? I can see how to set up account access via the Ultimate Rewards website. Then, I think I can combine...

Chase Sapphire Credit Card 50k==>50K Continental or AGR points

I'm not sure I understand how this works. . .once I get a Chase Ultimate Rewards Sapphire card, I can see that I can set up account access via the Ultimate Rewards website. Then, I think I can combine points from the Sapphire card with my AGR Mastercard is that true? I don't see how my AGR...

    New Amtrak Single Leval Cars

    1) The entry doors are too narrow. 2) The entry doors should be at track level. The stairs could be inside, past the luggage rack I've often cursed trying to schlep my luggage up the steps and through the door of a Hiawatha Amfleet or Horizon coach car between Milwaukee and Chicago.

Walker wants rail funding for WI

PaulM: spot on. They (HSR proponents) flubbed the language and lost the initiative. An extension or improvement of existing service sounds more reasonable (is less of a stretch) than brand new service.

Walker wants rail funding for WI

I know how a recall works. <_< I wouldn't count on Scott Walker winning the actual recall vote. There is much discontent in Wisconsin right now, regardless of where one stands on the issues. This kind of situation is never good for an incumbent, no matter what side you favor.

Walker wants rail funding for WI

"Overwhelmingly" is a bit of a stretch. <_< Walker only won by around 120,000 votes out of over 2.1 million votes cast. OK, 5 percentage points. But because voter turnout was so dismal, only around 25% of the eligible voters actually voted for him. He will be easy to recall, because only...

Walker wants rail funding for WI

It is not an "either/or" choice; it is a "both/and" situation. :ohboy: As far as commuting between Milwaukee and Madison, the drive on I-94 is a nightmare :( with much congestion and lots of truck traffic. Further, there are major Wisconsin cities (Oconomowoc, Watertown) that have no...

Trains seem to mostly meet around between 2 and 3 PM

I've noticed that most long distance train pairs e.g. 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 19 and 20, 21 and 22, 50 and 51, maybe more, all seem to meet their opposite-direction partners in mid-afternoon. So you have all of these trains more or less simultaneously meeting their mates. I haven't...

    Southwest Chief Stop In Albuquerque

I've shopped and purchased. For my money, Veronica Yellowhorse has the best jewelry. Most of the vendors are simply "retailers" and sell mass-market items, not necessarily their own work (which is fine), but Ms. Yellowhorse is an artist and makes and sells her own items (and some mass-market...

    Scanners

Nice! I've been considering an upgrade to a trunking scanner like yours and would appreciate hearing of your experiences with it. I understand that there is software available to make programming easy.

    Scanners

A good way to miss transmissions? Much faster? I don't think so. My BC72XLT scans 50 channels/second. :o The entire railroad band is scanned in less than 3 seconds. Also, if a channel is active, the scanner will automatically pause for 2 seconds to see if there is a response. Or you can...
