I've noticed that most long distance train pairs e.g. 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 19 and 20, 21 and 22, 50 and 51, maybe more, all seem to meet their opposite-direction partners in mid-afternoon. So you have all of these trains more or less simultaneously meeting their mates.

I haven't figured out if they might also meet at night or other times.

Am I seeing things that aren't really there?

ED: sorry I mangled the title.

On a daily long-distance train, you would meet a train on the same route in the opposite direction once approximately every 12 hours or so.

In general, the trains (particularly out west) tend to serve the same sections in daylight and the same sections at night in both directions. Therefore, it tends to happen that the trains meet in the middle of the day and the middle of the night (and less so in the morning or evening hours).
