In the early to mid-50's I traveled from East Saint Louis, IL. to Atlanta, GA. via passenger train. IIRC, I left from the old L&N yard in ESTL. Any of our passenger experts have a clue as to what train this was? I appreciate anyone filling in the blanks.........

I, unfortunately, believe every word of the story. I've been treated rudely while deadheading on Amtrak. If the weasels will treat a fellow railroader rudely, anything is possible! Amtrak continues to be their own worst enemy.

If you're talking about the shack at Fulton, it's open. Several months ago my conductor and I dead-headed from Fulton back to Centralia. At that time it was open, even at 0100. The sty actually has the appearance of being a temporary stop-over for the area homeless.

I'm currently employed by the IC railroad and run through Mattoon on a regular basis. Your assessment of the "depot" is 100% accurate!! On the former IC, freight trains are restricted to 60-MPH. If you have more than 13,000 trailing tons, you're restricted to 50-MPH. Do we achieve this speed? Only if we're going downhill. ;) The IC is, for the most part, extremely stingy with their power.
