Which Amtrak Routes Run on Union Pacific Trackage?

Also Chicago to St Louis regionals. If you mean original UP prior to 1980s mergers; none. (Except where UP has trackage rights, like Portland to Seattle on the BNSF.)

Two Danes on a US 15 day pass - where should we go?

From a scenery standpoint the best direction to travel the California Zephur Chicago to SanFrancisco is westbound, the coast starlight LA to Seattle is Northbound, the Empire Builder Seattle to Chicago is eastbound, especially with the new schedule departing Seattle in the afternoon. The...

Idea: Western LD trains split up into multiple shorter trains?

Assume a long distance train serves only 4 cities: ABCD its markets are AB AC AD BC BD CD = 6. break it up into three trains and it only serves AB BC and CD = 3.

    AutoTrain East/West

A Galesburg hub would gather traffic from a wider area than just Chicago, and it could serve Denver, Texas, and Flagstaff (Grand Canyon, Phoenix, Las Vegas, LA) markets. The first two destinations probably could be reached at the 50 mph average speed of Auto train. Flagstaff could be served...

    Best time to go west

If you want to see mountain railroads, I recommend going around the loop the other direction: morning ascent of the front range out of Denver and a morning crossing of Donner Pass. Glorietta and Raton Passes are in daylight either direction. You will be looking into the sun along the Pacific...

Cross-America trip in June; will appreciate advice

I agree with the Empire builder eastbound/California Zephur westbound suggestions. The scenery is better and the stopover time in SLC is better. You could rent a car and visit Yellowstone from SLC it is about the same distance as driving from Whitefish, MT. LWB

Which side of train CZ from Chicago to SLC and SLC to SF

I would try to get a seat on the North side of the train. You'll see Denver receading as you climb the front range, Donner Lake, etc. You'll miss some of the Colorado canyons, The view down into the American river, but also the afternoon sun. LWB

Should we take the Long Distance Trains off of Amtrak's back

I agree that the Starlight is probably the only long distance route where there is any possibility of getting all the states involved to participate, but why should CA, OR and WA pay for their train when the rest of the country doesn't pay for theirs? The long distance trains are the political...

Zephyr best seats and best side chicago to SF

When I rode the Empire Builder recently, the seats in the forward half of the car were set aside for parties of two or more, and the seats in the rear open for singles. It is a good idea to be near the head of the queue. Both sides of the train have plenty of scenery, but I would try for the...

    Name That Station!

Shanghai is correct. It is newton, Ks. http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh570/LWBaxter/Newton-Ks_zpsee6c3d41.jpg LWB

    Name That Station!

    Name That Station!

Here is an active AMTK station. The insert image icon won't work for me, so here is the link: http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh570/LWBaxter/LWB5_zpse2ea23e2.jpg LWB

Long Distance Business Class -- A practical idea?

I have wondered whether a recliner angled towards the window would work. I can see 14 fully reclining chairs fitting in the same space as 10 roomette or 28 long distance coach seats. That would make the price about the same as a roomette, assuming about half of the roomettes are single...

    Name That Station!

Jay Pea is correct. It is a very late Empire Builder westbound at Ellensburg. Incidentally hwy 26 that day was a couple of ruts in the drifting snow. Your Turn to post a photo. LWB

    Name That Station!

No, not Winona, and not Red Wing. While my initial hint, that the Empire Builder no longer stops at this depot, leaves open the posibility that it now stops at a different depot in the same city, in this case it no longer serves this town. LWB

    Name That Station!

No. not Red Wing, or Wilmar. Another hint: this is a college town. LWB

    Name That Station!

Hint: note the similarities in architecture between St Cloud and the station pictured. Probably built by the same railroad. LWB

    Name That Station!

Breckenridge, MN is another good guess, as it is on the historic GN route of the Empire Builder between the Twin Cities and Fargo, and the Empire Builder now runs via the NP line through Staples. but the depot pictured is not Breckenridge! LWB

    Name That Station!

No not Ann Arbor, not Williston. Swadian is on the right track as the Empire Builder no longer serves Yakima, but the depot pictured is not Yakima. LWB
