    Routes With Most Padding

I've been watching the Capital Limited between Cleveland and DC so I can know what to expect on an upcoming trip. It seems to frequently pull out of Cleveland over an hour late, but usually makes it in to DC within a half hour of its scheduled time. I would say that there must be some padding in...

    Bicycles & the Auto Train

That is a pain and a poorly worded policy given that I don't know of any rear-mounted bicycle racks that are not temporary. Is it possible to carry the bikes to the train on a rear rack, and then put the bikes inside the van for the train ride? That would be far less convenient then simply...

    more weird roomette pricing

Since I'm not a frequent flyer, I guess that's not much of a threat. But since I also don't have any desire to disembark in Charlotte, I guess it's still a moot point for now.

    more weird roomette pricing

This is good info, although it further upsets me because that means the airlines consider Charlotte a better destination than Raleigh. Having spent time both places, I disagree. But it still makes for some confusing, illogical situations in which I could fly the exact same flight into Charlotte...

    more weird roomette pricing

Yes, airlines have some wacky pricing. At least Amtrak seems to base it by distance traveled and popularity of the route. Airlines are a little more nebulous. When booking a flight, I noticed that I was changing planes in a city that was a short train ride away from my destination. I thought...

    Carolinian - service disruptions?

I don't know what an interlocking is, but I would say that's a likely reason. If I try and go from DC to Raleigh on that date I can choose from the Carolinian and the Silver Star. If I change my destination to one stop further, in Cary, my only option is the Silver Star. If I go one stop further...

Why is Amtrak coach more expensive than flying?

If I had to rent a car, they would be different. When you factor in the cost of a rental car, two people traveling together spend very close to the amount spent taking mass transit, so a 3rd person would be required to make the trip a clear win economically. Apart from the occasional local bus...

Why is Amtrak coach more expensive than flying?

The problem with 55 (or 58) cents per mile is that 1) that is an average, so a budget-conscious person can likely bring their expenses well below that, and 2) these numbers often seem to figure costs that are irrelevant to driving a car, and are more factors of simply owning a car. So you don't...

Multi-leg trip with a tight connection

I don't think this trip is eligible for any through fare savings under any circumstances. Amtrak's ticketing system doesn't acknowledge that trip is possible without doing it as a multi-city trip with an overnight stay in DC. Because there is an earlier train out of town the following day, my...

Why is Amtrak coach more expensive than flying?

This thread was started several years ago. Maybe things have changed. But for my upcoming trip, I originally thought I found airfare that was cheaper then the train, but when I went to book the flight, it was gone. Now the cheapest flight I can find is 30% more than Amtrak. I'm sure that many...

Multi-leg trip with a tight connection

Yes, this is what it sounded like customer service was cautioning me against. They said I would probably not be able to book two overlapping trips using the same payment information. Because my two potential DC to Raleigh trips were on separate days, and because my Cleveland to DC train was...

Multi-leg trip with a tight connection

I wasn't aware that was a concern. I think I'd be okay. I actually mentioned the idea when talking to Amtrak customer service trying to clarify their refund policy. They said I would probably not be able to buy two trips at the same time, but the same trip on two separate days should not be a...

Multi-leg trip with a tight connection

So far my Amtrak experience has been limited to short, in-state trips, but I'm looking at a trip from Cleveland, OH to Raleigh, NC this summer. When I plug my origin and destination trip into the on-line system, Amtak says it can't be done. When I do it as a multi-city trip with DC as my stop...

Super High Buckets on CL out of PGH

I priced the CL out of Cleveland to DC a couple of weeks ago for a trip in early June and got a price of $63, I think. Priced that same trip today for $79, so there has been a bump. Checking for later in the summer and it's still $63.
