    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

President Trump thinks like a businessman and not a politician. He will most likely push for cuts to those routes loosing money. Same goes for other federal programs loosing too much money. He said he's going to drain the swamp and that includes spending. Elections have consequences but...

What Amtrak Would Look Like Without State Funded Service?

States on the left coast would continue to fund rail service. It might not be Amtrak but they would fund. Same with the east coast. Where you're likely to loose service is the desolately populated small towns in fly over country.

Why can't things in the cabin be fixed?

I always carry duct tape in the sleepers :P

CS to CZ-EMY or SAC or some other station

AGR doesn't allow a connection in Emmeryville with the Coast Starlight and California Zephyr. For some STUPID reason they only allow the connection in Sacramento. Just thought you should know about that.

Use points now or use them after January?

I can see using amsnag even more beneficial.

Amtrak Guest Rewards 2.0 Coming January 2016

It sounds like the point for dollar redemption is a better deal than the old zone map redemption. For example, if I want to travel CHI to SEA one way on the Empire Builder at a roomette price say of $ 422.00 (I picked this just now from the Amtrak site for January 2016 travel) it would be...

Beatin Dead Horse Subject - Ice in Sleepers

I've never had trouble getting ice on the Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, California Zephyr or Southwest Chief. While it's not out in the open anymore the SCA's I've had are more than accomodating.

2 bottles of water per person per trip has been reduced to 1

There's allot of space on the lower level of the Superliners downstairs in the luggage racks. Seems to me they could install a water cooler in that space.

Who let the dogs out?!? (TSA is at RVR this morning)

TSA is so useless! They're hanging around at more stations doing absolutely nothing. Useless :angry2:

If They Could Redesign The Superliners

It's OLD equipment. Always carry duct tape to silence the rattles.

    Coast Starlight Business Class

I'm with SteveSTX on this one. Amtrak should at least have planned ahead of the BC access with putting chairs in the downstairs of the PPC. That's always been wasted space. surfgeek - not all that many years ago the wine tasting was FREE for sleeper class passengers. Now they charge for it...

    Coast Starlight Business Class

I hope this isn't going to pack em into the Parlour Car  They really should have stripped the seats out of the lower level "movie theatre" which is rarely used and installed bench seats or swivel chairs. The PPC needs more seating.

    Blackout dates

The key is travel origination date. You may not use AGR points on those dates.

    Passenger survey...All opinions accepted

I've been riding LD sleeper class for about 7 years. The most memorable SCA I ever had was on the California Zephyr when I took my elderly father from Emmeryville to Chicago. She decorated up the hallway and coffee area. Very friendly and helpful to my Dad. Made sure he was comfortable. She...

    What to do?

Yeah, my question was way too broad but I have picked up a few things I like from all your responses. And, I think I'll need 2 days in D.C. Thank you!!

Long Distance Business Class -- A practical idea?

You might get your wish when the Pacific Parlour Car comes back in service from maintenance.

    What to do?

Kinda Amtrak related. I'm taking the Cardinal #50 from Chicago to D.C. and once I'm there not sure what to do. I've never been there. The obvious seems to go visit Arlington National Cemetery! I'll be there only one day. Memorial Day. Any tips where to stay? How to get around safely...

Capitol Limited -vs- Lake Shore Limited

Not sure what I'll do. You've all offered excellent pros & cons for both trains. I'm already taking the Cardinal CHI-WAS so just need to decide LSL or CL on return to CHI.

What do you do when traveling alone LD over 30 hours

Very well said SarahZ. I travel alone about 50/50 of my long distance train trips. I LOVE it. Time just for me. When I'm feeling like I want to socialize I make my way down to the observation car and strike up a conversation. Always love retreating to my roomette when I want quiet time...

Capitol Limited -vs- Lake Shore Limited

So, I'm planning a trip from WAS to CHI and would like to know which route do you prefer and why? Which route is better so far as scenery goes. Any advantages or drawbacks on either route? Please do share
