Showers on Amtrak Sleepers - What are they like?

I have used them and have never had to wait in line. I found them very clean overall, but always wore shower shoes anyway. There are no time limits or anything, just take you time. Most importantly, be aware the train moves and you need to have a solid footing.

Lounge, luggage and DC Union Station

I used the Club Acela last July and left my luggage there at 11:30 AM, had lunch at Johnny Rockets in Union Station. I layered toured the Postal Museum and a few stores and arrived back at the lounge around 3. The bags were there just where I had left them and everything was fine. I boarded...

How have you found the patronage on Amtrak LD trains lately?

One year ago in April/May, I rode the SWC and the Capitol Limited both ways. I found the trains to be over half way full and mostly full of people with no small kids. I also noticed many people were more relaxed the Sightseer Lounges were about two thirds full. Last July, I rode the Capitol...

First Amtrak Trip in 6 Years, Couple of Questions

When you arrive in DC, ride the Circulator Bus that circle the Smithsonian museums and the national monuments. It's $1 per ride or free within 2 hours if you choose to make multiple stops. A SmartTrip card is useful for everyone. http://nationalmall.dccirculator.com/ The Metro is fairly safe...

My Interesting Adventure: WAS-KCY, July 8-15

I am going to start off this post by saying that everything started off crazy from the get go and went smooth sailing, for the most part, from there. I was not originally going to take this trip, but my employer shut down the plant for the first two weeks in July and so I got to thinking about...

Does Amtrak slow down in poor visibility?

Last year, I was on the westbound Capitol Limited somewhere in Indiana when it started storming and continued all the way to Chicago. I could barely see very far out the windows, but the train continued at regular speeds all the way.

why is Capital Limited late every day?

    1. There could be a multitude of scenarios that would make a train late (freight congestion, track work, accidents, mechanical breakdowns, weather). If you booked a a trip that involved a connection of 90 minutes or more between trains, Amtrak will guarantee it. If the Capitol Limited is late...

    New menu items

I want to thank everyone for the replies. I will definitely order the crab cakes and the chocolate mousse. I am on a diet, but I can't resist while I'm traveling on a train.

    Chicago Layover

I know this topic has been beaten to death at times, but I need to ask some things. I arrive in Chicago on the Capitol Limited on July 14 and depart that afternoon on the Southwest Chief. Assuming the Cap is on time or close to it I am going to the Sky Deck in the Willis Tower. How long are...

    New menu items

I know that the Amtrak's menu items have been out for some time and It has been over a year since my last Amtrak adventure. I see some new items on the menu for the Capitol Limited and the Southwest Chief that look good, so I was wondering how they taste. What are your opinions on the crab...

    A Couple of Baggage Questions

I am flying out to Ronald Reagan-National Airport in Washington, DC and renting a car. I am going to see a friend for a few days and then return the car to the airport and catch the Metro to take me to Union Station where I will board the Capitol Limited and then the Southwest Chief at Chicago...

Upcoming Trip Stuff (CHI-WAS-NYP-WAS-CHI, lounges, etc.)

I took the Capitol Limited last year and enjoyed it. The food and service was pretty good for the two times I rode it. The food was served in a timely manner and tasted pretty good. The Cap uses a Cross Country Cafe dining car which means half of the upstairs part is dining and the other part...

    Your funniest Amtrak story?

I have a couple. Last April, I was on my first Amtrak trip and was riding the SWC between Kansas City and LaPlata, MO just sitting peacefully in the lounge car when we past a freight train that made a lot of noise. I didn't say any thing, but flinched in my seat. There was a nice elderly lady...

    Sleeping accomodation

When I rode the Southwest Chief and the Capitol Limited last year, I had only a backpack with everything crammed in it in my roomette. I had luggage locks on the compartment's zippers. I never had an issue the entire trip. I always kept my ticket, wallet, car keys, and cell phone on me the...

Trip from Indy to California and back

You are on the top floor towards the middle of the car. In fact your room is next door to the Sleeping Car Attendant's room. The middle of the car generally offers the smoothest and quietest ride. If noise is an issue when sleeping, bring ear plugs. They helped me quite a bit.
