UPDATE according to this local TV station the highway and rail bridges MAY be reopened now (3:12PM PDT 5-1-08).

If you do a search on Google News for "Burlington Bridge" you can get the very LATEST info and news :

*******************************

The railroad bridge carries dozens of trains a day, including Amtrak. A spokesman says a decision on reopening the bridge will depend on the inspection. Amtrak was putting passengers from the eastbound California Zephyr on charter buses in Mount Pleasant, IA . Amtrak officials expected the westbound train to operate on its normal route later today.

Heads UP for those waiting on the Chicago arrival of Train 6 today 5-1-08.

This Trainorders posting reports that some sort of Barge HIT the big Bridge at Burlington, Iowa.

Train 6 was reported as trapped behind this mess.

Who knows how long it will take to inspect and repair this mess:

Here is a pointer to the discussion on railroad.net which gives some more info.
Apparently 5 has been detoured over CNW/UP. Don't know about 6.
I live about 10 miles from the Burlington bridge across the Mississippi River. It sounds like freight traffic has resumed across the bridge by late this morning.I haven't heard the westbound 5 on the scanner, it might return tomorrow evening.

I got a few (not very good) photos of 5 leaving Friday afternoon from the north end of CUS. The photos weren't great, but it's the best I could do from my 10th floor workplace a couple blocks west of the tracks.

The train was led by UP 4416.
