Anyone have any thoughts what Amtrak might have to cut if 1.2 billion is only approved?

Probably a little bit more capital improvement and overhaul. Some infrastructure will have to last just a bit longer. Some equipment might have to go without overhaul/rebuild just a bit longer. Maybe some wreck repairs might get put off.

I don't necessarily see any service being cut, but we are running out of time. As David Gunn has mentioned (regarding Amtrak's state-of-good-repair needs), they've kicked the can down the road so far that they've practically run out of road.

$1.2billion? No increase, no decrease, no way to not kill Amtrak without killing hundreds of other lesser funded programs in the pork barrel. Exactly what Amtrak was shooting for in the compromise.

Regarding cuts, I forsee no major routes cut for another year or longer. No different than any other year for Amtrak in the next 12 months, status quo for the past 31 years. Threats of shutdowns and service cuts won't happen again for months so things regarding Amtrak should calm down over the winter and through much of the spring- hopefully.

How far along are plans for new new auto carriers for Auto-Train? This is one item that is all too easy to postpone, just like its been done for years. Otherwise, you can slow down trackwork and the like, pushing some of the costs into the next fiscal year.

Of course, the big question really is just how long you can keep putting some of this work off.

The carriers really need to be done. Any car that needs parts has to have those parts machined for it since they are no longer made. This is one project that is a must have.

Just like the new diners and dorms to replace the falling-apart, 50-year-old Heritage fleet are a must have. Just like the replacement of catenary and bridges on the NEC are a must have.

Get in line.

I don't think when Amtrak submitted its budget request of 1.8B that such a draconian reduction would be offered. The Inspector General himself even said that 1.22B figure will require postponment or cancellation of some sorley needed capital projects. Keep in mind that that alottment represents a sum below last year's subsidy, espcially with the loan repayment factored in. Belts will be tightened very severly this year....

Not looking good 1.2 approved today. Some capitol projects will be put on hold Lets hope Gunn will roll the dice and cancel a high profile N.E coridor projects to get the attention of congress!! Look for 1 or 2 of the weaker performing long hauls to say bye bye..this is the begining of the end of long haul service..
