Thanks to a strong economy and soaring gasoline prices, the number of Californians choosing to board Amtrak trains rather than drive from one region of the state to another reached a record 4.6 million last year, said officials for the national passenger railroad report.

who owns the lines that amtrak runs on in cali?

Generally BNSF and UP. SCAX owns some stuff in the LA area, but its the big two that own most of the road.

UP owns nearly the entire route of the Capitol Corridor; about two miles belongs to the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (PCJPB - Caltrain).

BNSF owns most of the route of the San Joaquins; the remainder belongs to UP.

North of the Orange County border, most of the route of the Pacific Surfliner belongs to the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA - Metrolink); a small portion belongs to BNSF. South of Orange County, it belongs to the San Diego North County Transit District (NCTD - Coaster).
