I credit Amtrak's marketing department for their hard work in advertising Amtrak effectively. I have heard them advertising on the radio nd in the newspaper (promoting the California Zephyr from Reno NV), and then I read this. Amtrak is advertising to their future riders! This has been needed for quite some time!

Amtrak and Scholastic Marketing Partners develop an education program to teach core skills through the excitement of train travel
OAKLAND, Calif. — Amtrak and Scholastic Marketing Partners, a division of Scholastic, have teamed up to create a unique education program themed around train travel for fourth grade classrooms throughout California. The complete train curriculum, produced by education experts at Scholastic, is designed to help children build skills in language arts, math, science and geography as it brings the excitement and history of trains and train travel into the classroom. The program is expected to reach more than 1.3 million teachers, students, and parents and will be distributed in classrooms this month.
“Kids have a natural interest in trains and this program is a great way to make learning fun,” said Barbara Richardson, Amtrak’s vice president of marketing and sales. “Working with the educational experts at Scholastic, we’ve developed a supplementary curriculum that allows Amtrak to inform teachers, students and parents about the wonderful experiences of train travel.”
This multi-disciplinary curriculum meets state standards and includes classroom as well as at-home learning opportunities focused around the fun and excitement of train travel. The interactive program includes a poster teaching guide that contains a state map of California along with important lessons, and fun family activities that extend what students have learned in school into the home. The program is provided to teachers at no charge and offers opportunities for class field trips to a train in conjunction with the pre-existing Schools on Trains program on Amtrak trains in California (Pacific Surfliner, San Joaquins and the Capitol Corridor).
“The wonder and magic of train travel have intrigued children throughout time,” stated Shelley White, editorial director of Scholastic Marketing Partners. “This program combines the excitement of exploring America by train with core knowledge and skill-building in key subject areas to create an interactive, dynamic program for students and teachers alike.”
In addition, each student receives a flyer offered in English and Spanish to take home to their parents to further increase knowledge about train travel. The flyer will include a Kids Ride Free coupon, which is valid on the San Joaquins, Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner, Southwest Chief, California Zephyr, Sunset Limited and Coast Starlight routes. Sale and travel dates are October 15, 2003 through May 15, 2004.
