My family of 6 will be traveling by amtrak this summer from milwaukee to seattle. Youngest person is 17 - oldest 82. we all want to be seated together. Can seats be reserved? also - should i buy a room so that people can take turns sleeping? is that legal? I am assuming I buy 6 regular seats and then a bedroom on top of that?? I am confused! Please someone with experience - HELP!! comfort and cost are both an issue. thanks much!! suem

Welcome Sue! There's Good news and bad news about your plan! ;) The Good news, it's a wonderful trip and you have a group that wants to travel together! :)

The bad news: This is a very popular route in the summer, often sold out and the prices are high as they get due to the demand/time of the year! :( (called "High Bucket") I did some test bookings during July and most days the bedrooms are "Sold Out", the roomettes (for 2 persons only)are $661 which include meals plus Rail fare of $263 per person. There are discounts for Seniors, disability discounts, AAA,military etc. (see the amtrak.com website for details). Also if you aregoing to make this trip you should join Amtrak Guest Rewards (see website for details, it's like a frequent flyer program but most of us think better! If you have/use the AGR Master Card from Chase you also get bonus points for free trips! (theres a referral program where yoiu get extra points and so do the person who refers you!)

The coach seats are very comfortable on the Superliner LD trains, sort of like a business class domestic seat, maybe even a little more comfortable! There is a section here for first time riders, please read it, also Amtak.com has lots of hints/tips info to help you. You wont have use of a shower, the food prices are a little high in the diner and cafe car (you can take food and snacks, recommended!) and the trip is over two nights so blankets, pillows, DVD players, music. etc. are helpful for sleeping relaxing, during the day the scenery will keep yall busy! You can get up and walk around (the bathrooms are downstairs), visit the sight seer lounge car. You can reserve a seat, but not particular seats in coach but they do have sections for couples and families and will try to seat yall together, there are certain cars for where you are going and lots of people ride this train for transportation, get on/off @ various stops. Once you get your seat assignment when boardin you will have them till you get to your destination.(try to avaoid the stairs and seats by the end doors, middle of the train is best!you can ask the attendant when you board, there is early boarding for those that need, it, ie Seniors etc.)

If you book roomettes (it woulkd take three for 6 people) or a deluxe bedroom (if available), you can ask for a particular room, upstairs or down, also in coach the lower level seating is reserved for people with disabilities but most people prefer to ride upstairs since the sights are better and all movement through the train is upstairs only! Perhaps you coul book two bedrooms (called a suite)together which would hold six people with meals and have two bathrooms/showers but it will be very expensive but a nice way to travel if you can handle the price!Rooms/seats in the middle of the train ride the best!

I dont want to seem negative and perhaps the price seems high, but it wont be much more than flying six people, plus you have the thrill of riding a train through some beautiful scenery, the best way to travel! There are lots of experts on this forum who will be glad to help, please feel free to ask, and try to book early as possible, after the middle of August it does slow up a little, I dont know your time frame for the trip but do test bookings on amtrak.com for different dates to get prices/availability etc. Good plan ,Good luck! :)

Legal? Nope.

Remember, all meals are included in your sleeper fare, so check out booking 3. You will enjoy that much better than trying to do some sort of covert swapping around.

There are no assigned seating in coach. You may or may not be able to find 6 seats together, depending on several factors.

Tickets have the passenger's name on it. If you buy a bedroom in the sleeper car for two of your family, those two tickets will have two names on it. Passengers with only coach tickets are not really allowed to sleep in the bedroom. Plus, be prepared to be challenged by Amtrak personal on-board of anyone attempting to walk from a coach car to a sleeper car. Typically, you have to walk thru a dining car, and the workers in there are pretty good at spotting anyone going where they don't belong.

If you all get caught, the penalty could be that your family will be escorted off the train at the very next stop.

If your finances permit, I agree with the 2 bedrooms as a suite. Another possibility is one bedroom & one H room (If one of your 6 qualifies). The H room (handicapped) is on the lower level, costs no more than a roomette & has it's own 1/2 bath (no shower).

As said before, when considering the sleepers, don't forget to factor the cost of the food - about $50 per day per adult appetite.

Welcome to the board!

Since you are talking 6 people, if you want sleepers, you would need [3of either roomette or bedroom, unless one of your party is mobility impaired, then you can get 1 "H" bedroom, & 2 of either roomette or bedroom.

You could choose to book a suite which would hold 4 with two full bathrooms & a roomette, or "H" bedroom.

Roomettes & Bedrooms only hold 2. They will not book more than two in the bedrooms or roomettes! All meals & beverages in the diner, except alcohol are included- plus coffee, juice & bottled water & newspaper, towels & washcloths for showers in the sleeper. Have great trip! I personally feel it's worth getting roomettes/bedrooms if you can, it will be fairly long trip for all and a flat bed is great to have for night time (& naps!)

How about a family bedroom (sleeps 4) and a roomette? With luck, maybe you could get the roomette on the lower level right by the Family Bedroom.
Family Bedroom does not sleep 4 adults. There are only 2 adult sized beds. The 2 little child beds wouldn't be adequate for someone much over 10, if that.

Also, you cannot "hot bunk" the rooms and have some passengers just with coach tickets and swap. Only those ticketed with sleepers are entitled to sleeper services (including meals). The attendants are usually pretty alert to what is going in their cars.

That is only if you pay for meals in the dining car. Heck just bring a cooler with some sandwiches, chips, ect and the food budget goes way down. There are lots of things that don't require cooking. I mean I can bring aboard some sushi for dinner and lox for breakfast and blow the dining car out of the water.

They are also sticklers about the Family Bedroom-2 Adults, 2 Children. The OP said ages range from 17-82.

So they would only be able to put 2 from the group in there.

Oops! Forgot the age part!
No worries-I did notice that some posters either missed the total of the group, or thought somehow you could put 3 in a deluxe bedroom. I think they used to let you do that, but people complained so much about the small space that they don't allow it anymore. I think if it was a couple with a small child or baby it may be okay, but I don't know if they will even allow that anymore.

What about a family of 4 dwarfs or 'little people' ? Surely, in the end, size matters. Yes?

I love it! I guess we aren't in Kansas anymore!

Three years ago they allowed three in the family bedroom on the Texas Eagle. When I tried it after that, they would not let us book it. The youngest had just graduated from high school but I was the shortest so I got the little bed. Had to kind of sleep at a angle.

The bottom line here is that the rooms on the popular LD routes are mostly sold out for this summers trips. They are only going to get Roomettes or if someone qualifies, the accessible bedroom (that only sleeps 2). Someone 82 could probably get the H room without a problem and have another adult join them. The rest will have to sleep in roomettes unless there is a last minute cancellation on a bedroom suite but that is very unlikely as two adjoining bedrooms would need to be freed up at the same time. I would NOT recommend coach for an 82 year old person let alone any senior or middle age person. You'd have to highly adaptable to spend an overnight in coach and be used to sleeping sitting up. Not for us but for a young couple they can probably adjust fine.

Then were will the camera and production crews, which seem to be required to follow all "little people" around, sleep??

Sorry, I was just watching the "little people" on TLC traveling around Europe on trains.
