Either the new status maps are wigging out, or the Crescent is on a detour. Just punched up ASM and the Amtrak version, ASM is showing the Crescent in Service Disruption, and Amtrak concurs. However, Amtrak's GPS data is showing 19 moving at 39 MPH about halfway between Petersburg and Rocky Mt. Anyone know what's up?
 
No inside information -- but it's probably exactly what it looks like. If there was some disruption on Norfolk Southern between Alexandria and Greensboro, the Crescent could perfectly well have been rerouted via CSX and the Piedmont route.
 
At 2320 it passed RMT. Under ideal circumstances, a train can run RMT-RGH in 1 hour 6 mins. Best time RGH-GRO is 1 hr 31 mins, so that puts arrival GRO at 0157 or roughly 90 mins late - assuming CSX lets it run fast.
 
Well CSX only has control of it until it gets to Selma, it belongs to NS beyond that...
 
Hmmm.....service from Richmond to Atlanta.....conjures up memories of the Silver Comet...... :)
 
If you could figure out a way to squeeze about an hour out of the ATL-CLT-RGH-RVR-WAS-NYP run its not inconceivable to extend the Carolinian all the way to Atlanta (granted GA and/or SC would have to be throwing down some cash for that to happen). The run from ATL-CLT is at about 5 hours right now, the Carolinian's run is 13:48 presently. Unfortunately to squeeze out an hour from that run you're definitely going to need 125 MPH on the corridor (supposedly attainable once the new baggage cars come online), but you'll need increased speeds either from WAS-RVR or RGH-CLT. Right now corridor improvements in these two segments seem to be focused more on additional capacity, not additional speed.

So what would be bad enough to warrant rerouting 19 southbound, but not 20 northbound?
 
NS had a freight derailment north of Greensboro. It was cleared by the time 20 passed through, although 20 lost an hour in the congestion.

At 0750, 19 is a little south of Clemson... running about 2 hours late.

Neither Georgia nor South Carolina has expressed the slightest interest in paying for an Atlanta-Charlotte train. No chance.

The long-term target for Raleigh-Charlotte running time is 2 hours 30 minutes. NCDOT is currently 40 minutes away, and they've already done the "low hanging fruit" projects. The ultimate answer is SEHSR which would shave over an hour from Raleigh-Richmond.

That would do it. Though I have to wonder if the time saved by having to go the long way and bus passengers to the intermediate stops at Manassas/Charlottesville/etc was worth the effort. Is there a late enough Lynchburger to have transferred these intermediate passengers to?
 
171 runs ahead of 19, so they may have tried to divert passengers if possible to 171, but I'd guess there was probably some bustitution involved. Running via CSX was probably the right call though, no telling how long they would have sat there waiting for them to clear up, let alone all of the other traffic in the area that got held up in the process. This is an easy re-route to do as well since it didn't require any pilots, just some guys off the extra board that are qualified over that route.
