DC to Maine Trip advice

I've only ridden between WAS and NYP (and various points in between, such as BAL & PHL) a few times, but I didn't find it to be "gloomy" or particularly unattractive. There certainly are some rundown portions or cities that you travel through, but there are also plenty of standard, even attractive, suburbs, as well as a fairly scenic stretch between BAL and PHL.
