I have rode the Portland Sleeper car (last car in the Empire Builder consist) many a time.
Never researched the entire train for what the exact function is of each - just a causal guess.
The baggage car - the diner and sight seeing lounge of course an exception.
I know it is a 5 car walk from the last car to the diner.
