It sounds like they're going to build a modern structure on top of the original headhouse, unless they want to convert some of its upper floors to retail space. I'm skeptical of this plan, since it might ruin the historic look and feel of the Great Hall, the last such space in a train station left in Chicago.
I remember the way that Union Station was in the 1960's as I would go there as a teen age rail fan and walk down the ramps that lead from the street. There was the long concourse where huge magazine stands were and a drug store that is now a resturant near the great hall. I think they will ruin the hall if they dont do it like Washington DC and use space now that is going to waste. Does anyone know what they are doing with the Fred Harvey Red Lion resturant that used to be there??? I ate there a couple of times before making train trips. I cannot remmeber how large the resturant was. ??
