Mine would be a sleeper loung (sleeper car passengers only) B)

Actually that is not a new concept....pre-Amtrak there were plenty of arrangements of cars which were combination of lounge car and with various sleeping car accommodations. I am not sure if Amtrak inherited any such cars from the railroads in 1971....but they did exist in abundance and in various types. In a recent forum on "Observation cars" some have referred to cars which were Observation-lounge-sleepers.An observation car, of course, would normally be on the rear...but there were plenty of mid-train lounge-sleeping cars as well.

Dude, I am one of the old-timers(58) on this forum...so I sometimes come up with remarks that seem to be from another planet.........but they reallyare not....

Oh yes, and usually such cars as I described above were for sleeping car passengers only. Some trains, for instance, had a sleepr-lounge and a separate coach lounge. Sleeper passengers were welcome in either; coach passengers only welcome in their combination coach-lounge. Some trains, also had a regualr full size lounge car(like today) which was for everybody and PLUS had a smaller, more intimate sleeper lounge. All kinds of variations.

Bill, I have never had the occasion to think any of your remarks to be "from another planet". You seem to be insightful as any of the other lunatics around here!

And, if on that "other planet" trains would always run on time, train staff was always courteous and helpful, and I could have a deluxe bedroom in a dome-observation car, I wouldn't mind being from that planet, too!

Thanks for the kind remarks Seajay.......I was just poking a little fun at my oldie goldie memories, of which I have many........guess, actually a lot of us appear to be from "another planet" to our nonrailfan friends but guess what....they are from another planet to us if they have not discovered the joys of rail travel!!!!!

The goldie oldie memories are greatly appreciated. Besides, all the "kids" around here need to know how things used to be! :D

And, isn't dreaming about the *good* aspects of train travel from years gone by part of what we do here? :)

Yes, daydreaming about the "old days" is good.....but MAN OH MAN..how good it is to see people 13- to 16 years old just as fascinated at their ages by trains as I ever was at the same age.......they are the lifeblood of the future.....we all need each other. It is true that to understand the present and the future you need to understand the past....but we are all in it together.

Kinda back to the original question about a car like a sleerper lounge, does anybody remember if Amtrak ever did inherit sleeper-lounges? They did exist, in good measure, but I do not think any carried over. Let us know if you do know of any.

hello

On the origanal question. A viewliner dome diner build to the union pacific plan would be neat.

Also a viewliner dome observation sleeper similar to the plans of the origanal California Zephyr cars but with showers in the rooms.

Probabaly never,

Oh Well,

John

I couldn't agree more. Mostly, I'm lamenting that I'm not a "kid", anymore, no matter how hard I try to be.

As different people have mentioned before in this forum, the "good old days" weren't always so good. But, there were many postive aspects of train travel from the "Golden Age" that, alas, we shall likely never see again. At least, not with the current state of affairs.

I think it's been mentioned before about having a diner with some number of stools with counter service. This makes it easier for solo travelers who aren't always comfortable being forced to sit with others they don't know.

It seems, though, that high on many people's "wish list" would be some kind of dome-observation-lounge car. I'd sure go along with that. It would be nice to have sleeping compartments in that same car but if it was placed at the end of a train behind current sleeping cars, that would be just as good for me.

Chief Rhodes, I do not remember the EXACT floor plan of the old CZ Observation-dome(I could look it up tonight---it can probably be found elsewhere on the internet) but ONE of the sleeper rooms, the Drawing Room, did indeed have a shower for the occupants of that room. Very few trains had showers back then,(one of the things which is indeed BETTER today) but most of them were in rooms called "master rooms"...but for some reason the drawing room on the CZ had a shower.

Mine would be a first class car for medium distance trains with seats that recline nearly flat with ample legroom to allow for this and good size windows so you could recline and watch the scenery passing you by.

A Viewliner Deluxe Sleeper.
I think Viewliner is a little biased. Or, he's stuck in a rut!

Maybe he just has a one-track mind...

seajay :D

Now that I've had time to think it over I'd just like my own private car outfitted to suit my needs...but I think I'd need the winning Super Lotto jackpot ticket first :)

In regard to the Observationlounge-sleeper from the pre-AMtrak CZ , mentioned earlier. I found last night that it had three bedrooms and one drawing room. The drawing room had a shower, as I had thought.

Well for one thing I know of many people in Standard rooms who would gladly have gotten a Deluxe room, had it not been sold out. So I think it would be some good to Screw around with on Silver Service (or at least on the Silver Meteor). The thing is someone like Talgo or Temoinsa should build it as they make good quailty trains unlike some builders (cough! cough! Bombardier  ).

I would like to see a hot tub car for sleeper passengers, plus a casino car for additional revenue(to finance the hot tub car).

The casino car could only be open in states that allow casino gambling unless they are run by a nomadic tribe of native americans :)

Personally, I like the idea of the "hot tub car" but the potential for a flood in an emergency application is a drawback :)

Give me a Deluxe Sleeper and a non-smoking Viewliner FC lounge designed similarly to an unrefurbished Amfleet II, or like a Superliner and I'll be happy.
