Does this discount apply to retired military personnel and their families or strictly active duty? Thanks

also

Children (ages 2-15) of active-duty US military personnel are eligible to receive a 10% discount in addition to the everyday children's 50% discount on the lowest available adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains, including for travel on the Auto Train.

You must present a valid active-duty United States Armed Forces identification card.

FWIW I have ridden Amtrak about a dozen times in the three years since I've joined the Navy and I have used a military fare every time. I have never been asked for my military id, nor have i voluntarily shown it. I have always been in civilian clothes and have always shown my drivers license. I don't know if this was a courtesy from the conductor to me, if I have a "military" look or if the conductor has just been inattentive, but this has been my experience everytime I have ridden Amtrak in the last three years.

This has been my experience as well in the half dozen or so trips I've taken with the .mil discount.

It appears that there are inconsistencies in how the discount is given. Things went so fast during the predeployment happenings that I didn't yet have my active duty id while my husband was deployed (but still in trainup in MS). In Atlanta I was allowed the discount one time but not another when I explained the above. No offenses meant to anyone in Mississippi, but the time I got it was when I told the ticket agent that there was nothing else to do in Hattiesburg EXCEPT see dh. He laughed and gave it to me.
